MITRANS is Malaysia advisory transportation institute and is responsible for transportation research, consultancy and training. The aim of the institute is to play a leading intellectual role in strategic transportation and logistics planning and development. In addition, we aim to contribute to nation building by providing a stronger focus on delivering innovative solutions to address transportation problems. Over the years, MITRANS has also taken the lead in initiating changes, particularly in the application of new technologies, in the transportation industry.

MITRANS is prepared to provide innovative research and real-life approaches to the many challenges that the transportation industry faces in this interconnected age. Based at Universiti Teknologi MARA, a university with breadth of scholarship and entrepreneurial heritage, the institute is able to engage researchers and senior academics with specialist knowledge and know-how from multi-disciplinary fields, ranging from Freight Logistics and Urban Transportation to Innovative Technology and Transport Engineering. To ensure that the knowledge and skills of our staff and students as well as the technologies we create will contribute to the development of the industry, we commit ourselves to teamwork and effective partnerships with the government, industry and local authorities.

In addition, MITRANS was appointed to represent Malaysia as a member of the Asia-Pacific Network for Transport and Logistics Education and Research (ANTLER), a body under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). ANTLER was formed in 2003 to develop networking among research institutions specialising in transport and logistics. MITRANS was involved in the establishment of ANTLER and actively participates in its activities, including meetings and seminars. MITRANS is also one of the key partners of the Transportation Research Links between EU and Asia for Sustainable Development (TRANSLINK), a project funded under the European Commission AsiaLink Grant Scheme. TRANSLINK as main activities include providing training in transportation research methodology and research supervision. In pursuit of its objectives, MITRANS maintains close liaison with a wide range of government and public agencies. The institutes Advisory Council which has been configured to provide unbiased feedback and strategic direction comprises of the Chairmen and Director Generals of public and private entities that include:

  • The Ministry of Transport, Malaysia
  • The Malaysian Highway Authority
  • Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB)
  • The Ministry of International Trade and Industry
  • The Chartered Institute Of Logistics and Transport (Malaysia)

MITRANS staff conduct local and international research and study projects on transportation issues. As a result, the institute issues various publications to provide important, clear and credible information to the public, the government and the industry. As Malaysia as central advisory transportation body, MITRANS features prominently in national forums, seminars, and public meetings where questions of transportation policy are under debate.

Under its current director, Dr. Harlina Suzana Jaafar, MITRANS continues to make its mark in the Malaysian transportation sector through its sterling operations to provide specialist training services, consultancy, promote dialogue and user-acceptance, indirectly raising the university as profile and contributing to the realization of Malaysia as Vision 2020.
