Doctor of Philosophy in Transport and Logistics (Research)

Program Educational Objectives:

Malaysia Institute of Transport (MITRANS) offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Transport and Logistics fully by RESEARCH since the year 2009. Our Ph.D. program aims to produce postgraduate that meet our Program Educational Objectives :

  1. Transport and Logistics Experts who demonstrate  high competency in the dynamic environment of transport and logistics 
  2. Transport and Logistics Experts who possess outstanding analytical and problem-solving in transport and logistics
  3. Transport and Logistics Experts who portray  exemplary communication and organizational skills and positive traits as leaders 
  4. Transport and Logistics Experts who display high professionalism and entrepreneurship with sound ethical values in promoting innovative ideas in transport

Entry Requirements:

  1. Minimum a masters degree in any related fields (such as business management, transport engineering, mathematics, transport law, operation management, and others)
  2. Applicants from diverse fields such as law, engineering, business management, and architecture are invited for our PhD research programs in transport and logistics, supply chain management, operational management, HALAL, GREEN, legal and related areas
  3. Fresh graduates may apply; however, working experience is an advantage

Year 1

  • Attend Research Methodology Modules
  • Do Literature Reviews
  • Decide Topic of Research
  • Develop Research Design
  • Complete Research Proposal
  • Defense Research Proposal (DRP)

Year 2

  • Organize Access for Data Collection
  • Develop Research Instruments
  • Conduct Pilot Study
  • Carry Out Data Collection and Analysis

Year 3

  • Do Data Analysis
  • Analyze Findings
  • Prepare Thesis
  • Intention to Submit Thesis
  • Submission of Thesis
  • Viva Voce 

 

Program Structure:

Each candidate is assigned to one supervisor and co-supervisor throughout the duration of the study. For the first year, the candidate is required to attend compulsory modules organized by the Institute of Graduate Studies UiTM (IPSIS) to prepare him/herself to conduct one's own research. Any update will go through IPSIS Website

The candidate will work closely with the supervisor and present his/her ongoing research regularly to MITRANS, seminars, colloquium, and conferences until completion and examination of the thesis. These provide exposures and opportunities towards developing meaningful research ideas and findings towards a new body of knowledge and to prepare for the final oral examination of viva voce.

Several support programs are designed and conducted for the students to enhance their knowledge and skills in their fields of research as well as preparing the students to complete their studies within the stipulated duration.

  1. Research Method for Transport and Logistics (Research Methodology)
  2. Transport System, Management and Analysis
  3. Principles of Transport Modelling
  4. How to Write a Proposal and Thesis
  5. Database Management and Handling
  6. Geographic Information System
  7. Traffic Management and others (if relevant)

 

Program Outcomes:

Candidates who are undergoing our postgraduate programs are supervised by academic staff in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia and pools of experts from the alumni and the industry in the fields of transport, logistics, engineering, legal, architecture, business and management. Hence, upon completion of the programs, the candidates should able to achieve the following Program Outcomes :

  1. Synthesize knowledge to contribute to original research  in transport and logistics
  2. Conduct research independently and systematically in the field of transport and logistics
  3. Develop advanced practical skills leading to new and innovative ideas in transport and logistics
  4. Provide expert advice to society by critically appraising problems in transport and logistics.
  5. Act effectively as an individual and in a group as a team
  6. Demonstrate social, cultural, global, and environmental responsibilities and ethics of a professional in transport and logistics
  7. Integrate information to instill lifelong learning in the transport and logistics community.
  8. Portray managerial and entrepreneurial skills
  9. Display effective leadership qualities

Duration of Study:

MITRANS and UiTM emphasize Graduate on Time (GOT); thus a candidate is expected to complete his/her study within the stipulated program duration. It is the responsibility of the candidate to consult/meet his/her supervisor regularly and plan his/her progress of study. Any request for extension of the study, the candidate has to appeal in accordance with IPSIS rules and regulations

MODE OF STUDY (Doctor of Philosophy - LT990)

  • Full-time: 5 - 14 semesters
  • Part-time: 5 - 14 semesters

These are the directions on areas of research in accordance with MITRANS and the current national strategic transformation plans affecting transport and logistics industry: 

  1. Institutional factors; Operational issues; Services issues; Policies and laws; Global and International competitiveness; Challenges in business and industry;
  2. Human capital development;
  3. Technology and innovation; Green Logistics; Halal Logistics; and any other related and relevant areas.
